UNC-Chapel Hill professor Aziz Sancar, a 2015 Nobel Prize winner, and his wife, UNC-Chapel Hill professor Gwen Sancar, established the Aziz and Gwen Sancar Foundation, a 501(C)3 non-profit organization in 2007, with an educational and charitable mission to increase understanding of Turkey and to promote closer ties between the United States and Turkey. The Foundation hired Innovative Design for the new Turkish Cultural and Community Center in the heart of his “home” town Chapel Hill due to Innovative Design’s long history and strong commitment to sustainability. This project targets net-zero energy consumption and demonstration of sustainable strategies in a project that can become an exemplary project for the town, which will speak out their strong commitment to the sustainability.
