The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the new Heritage Middle School as a SEDI building, "Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR" rating. It has also been awarded the "School of Excellence" for 2004 by the State of North Carolina and named one of the top 25 Most Improved K-8 Schools. Heritage Middle School incorporates extensive sustainable design elements. In 2005, the Heritage Middle School was selected by the Sustainable Building Industry Council (SBIC)
as the 'Nation's Top Exemplary Sustainable Building'.
